It is notoriously difficult to germinate this seed. After years of trying even we do not have a suggested germination treatment for Carex pensylvanica. The plant reproduces in nature more often by underground rhizomes than by seed. To get a solid stand of this sedge that so many desire, we recommend buying a few plants to divide over the years. It will spread between 3"-8" each year depending on the soil moisture of the site.

  1. Purchased These Again This Year 5 Star Review

Posted by on 4th May 2014

Last year Ion Exchange was very careful to send me plugs that were well-rooted and ready to survive shipping. Those plants survived a very cold winter at 2600 feet elevation in Virginia. They are now many times larger than they were when I planted them a year ago and they have begun to reproduce under ground. I love them! This year I ordered 21 more!
