(PLS) Porcupine Grass (Stipa Spartea) is a cool season grass that is found in the dry open prairie. It's preference is full sun, mesic to dry conditions. Habitats include mesic to dry black soil prairies, sand prairies, gravel prairies, dolomite prairies, hill prairies, upland savannas and sandy savannas, pastures, roadsides, and areas along railroads. However, fertile loamy soil and a little shade is tolerated. Growth occurs during spring and early summer. The basal leaves are semi-evergreen.
